Start with the referral question
Ask the clinician which investigation is appropriate and what it is intended to clarify. Different scans answer different questions. Before booking, confirm whether a referral is required and whether the service accepts your referring clinician.
For MRI, the service needs safety information such as implants, metal, pregnancy and relevant contrast or kidney concerns. Provide accurate answers and discuss anything uncertain with the imaging team.
Compare the exact scope
Quotes should specify the type of scan, body area, whether contrast is anticipated and whether reporting is included. A price for one body area cannot be compared directly with a broader examination. Ask whether extra views or contrast could generate another charge.
Who receives and explains the report?
An MRI is interpreted by a radiologist and results go to the referring clinician. Confirm how that works for your booking. Ask when you should expect the report, whether you can obtain your images and who arranges any necessary follow-up.
- Is the reporting fee included?
- How is an urgent or unexpected finding escalated?
- Is a result consultation included?
- Can the report and images be shared with your usual care team?
Avoid an incomplete pathway
A quick appointment is helpful only if the next step is clear. Budget for a specialist consultation if the result needs one. Keep the referral, written quote and report together, and ask the service who to contact if the result has not arrived within the stated period.
Before choosing between NHS and private care
Start by identifying the service you need and whether you already have a referral or existing care plan. Ask your usual clinician about the relevant NHS route, then use a private quote to understand the alternative pathway rather than only its appointment speed.
Our handover guide helps identify who will order tests, interpret results and manage continuing treatment. Use the appointment preparation sheet to keep your questions and next steps together.
