Check the professional and the service
Physiotherapy is available through NHS and private routes. Check a private physiotherapist’s HCPC registration and ask about experience relevant to your needs. The first appointment usually considers symptoms, history and function before a treatment plan is discussed.
Understand the appointment format
Ask how long the assessment and follow-up sessions last, whether you will usually see the same person, and what an online appointment can cover. Explain practical constraints such as mobility, travel, work and access needs before booking.
Compare the plan, not a bundle alone
Ask what you are working towards and when progress will be reviewed. If a block of sessions is offered, check whether you can start with an assessment and decide about later appointments after understanding the plan. Read expiry, cancellation and refund terms.
- Is a written exercise or self-management plan included?
- How much are follow-up appointments?
- Are equipment or additional services charged separately?
- What happens if symptoms change or the plan is not helping?
- Does any workplace or insurance benefit cover the service?
Make follow-through realistic
Ask the clinician to explain exercises and how they fit your circumstances. Clarify how to ask questions, when to stop and seek advice, and what the next review will assess. Keep the plan so another clinician can understand what has already been tried.
Before choosing between NHS and private care
Start by identifying the service you need and whether you already have a referral or existing care plan. Ask your usual clinician about the relevant NHS route, then use a private quote to understand the alternative pathway rather than only its appointment speed.
Our handover guide helps identify who will order tests, interpret results and manage continuing treatment. Use the appointment preparation sheet to keep your questions and next steps together.
