First match the hernia and the planned operation

Section 1 of 6 · 1 min read

The NHS describes open and laparoscopic approaches to inguinal hernia repair. The approach offered depends on the hernia and your health. A cheaper published figure cannot establish which operation is suitable. Start with the clinician’s diagnosis, whether one or both sides are involved, and whether this is a first repair or a recurrence.

Ask for the proposed operation in writing before seeking a second quote. A heading that simply says “hernia repair” leaves too much unresolved. If the second provider recommends a different approach, discuss the clinical reasons before treating its figure as a price for the same work.

Read the consultation and treatment figures separately

Section 2 of 6 · 1 min read

Practice Plus Group and Spire Hull show consultation charges separately from the treatment figures used above. Nuffield Guildford’s £4,490 guide total already combines £4,290 treatment with an initial consultation allowance of £200. Its consultation starts at that amount, so confirm the personal fee. Do not add the allowance twice.

Check how many appointments you will pay for before surgery is agreed, whether an existing referral is accepted, and what a second opinion would cost. A paid consultation buys assessment; it does not guarantee that surgery will be offered. Ask what happens financially if the consultant advises observation or a different treatment.

Turn the advertised amount into a written scope

Section 3 of 6 · 1 min read

A quote should identify the surgeon, anaesthetic arrangements, hospital, operation and planned stay. Ask whether mesh or another implant is included and whether any preoperative tests are already covered. The phrase “all inclusive” is useful only when the included care and the exceptions are set out beside it.

Keep a separate list of unresolved charges instead of entering zero for them. Ask how the price changes if investigations alter the plan, and who authorises a revised quote. Request the quote’s expiry date, deposit rules and cancellation terms. Do not assume another hospital in the same group will use the same package.

Ask how a change of plan and aftercare are handled

Section 4 of 6 · 1 min read

Before paying, clarify the arrangement if the operation is postponed, a longer stay is required or additional care becomes necessary. Ask the provider to distinguish care covered by the agreed package from services that may produce another bill. This is a request for financial clarity, not a prediction that complications will occur.

For aftercare, record the number and format of included reviews, the contact for wound concerns and the route outside office hours. If you live some distance away, establish where follow-up takes place. A low travel cost on the day of surgery can be outweighed by several return visits.

Keep NHS assessment and private payment as separate decisions

Section 5 of 6 · 1 min read

The NHS explains that some hernias without symptoms may not need treatment. Discuss the reason for surgery and the available NHS route with your GP or surgical team. Local assessment and referral arrangements need checking; a price comparison does not decide urgency or establish eligibility.

If you have an existing NHS referral, tell the teams about any private assessment and ask how reports will be shared. Avoid cancelling an appointment until your next plan is clear. Our NHS and private care guide explains the questions to ask when moving between services.

Plan the practical cost of recovery

Section 6 of 6 · 1 min read

Ask your surgeon about your own work, lifting, driving and support needs rather than setting leave around a generic online timetable. The NHS recovery guidance explains that recovery can take several weeks and may be longer for some people. Follow the instructions from the team responsible for your operation.

Add transport, help at home and possible time away from paid work to your personal budget. These costs are distinct from the hospital’s fee. Take a short question list to the consultation and leave with a named contact, next action and written explanation of what your payment covers.

Your questions, answered

Are these prices for every kind of hernia?

No. These examples concern inguinal hernia repair. Confirm the technique, one or both sides, recurrence and complexity; other hernias require their own quotes.

Answer link

Do all displayed prices handle the first consultation the same way?

No. Practice Plus Group and Spire Hull show it separately from the treatment amounts above. Nuffield Guildford’s guide total already includes a £200 initial consultation allowance; its actual consultation fee starts at £200.

Should I choose open or keyhole repair based on the price?

Discuss the approach with the surgeon. Price listings do not assess your hernia, medical history or the relative benefits and risks for you.
