Help With NHS Healthcare Costs: Prescriptions, Dental & Glasses

Start with the charge you need help with. Prescription, dental and optical rules are different, and an entitlement for one does not automatically cover the others.

START WITH THE DECISION

What you need to establish.

In England, check exemptions and income-based help before paying for a prescription prepayment certificate or assuming you must meet the full NHS charge. Optical vouchers contribute towards eligible costs; dental bands apply to a course of NHS treatment. Rules elsewhere in the UK differ.

  • Identify the service and nation

Check whether this is an NHS or private charge and where care is provided. England’s charge rules should not be applied across the whole UK.

  • Check the right entitlement

Review the rules for that particular charge, including the relevant date and evidence. Do not assume every benefit award means free care.

  • Keep the certificate and receipt

Confirm what needs to be shown or recorded and ask about any applicable refund route when paying. A later application may not settle an earlier payment.
