Choose the appointment around the need

Section 1 of 5 · 1 min read

Ask whether the service can assess your concern online or whether an in-person examination may be needed. Check appointment length, who you will see and whether you can book with the same clinician again. An urgent problem should use the appropriate urgent-care pathway rather than wait for a convenient private slot.

What does the fee include?

Section 2 of 5 · 1 min read

Request separate prices for the consultation, any prescription administration, medicines, tests, referral letters and follow-up. Ask whether a short result discussion is included or requires another appointment. Confirm cancellation terms and how late-running consultations are handled.

  • Is the quoted appointment online, telephone or in person?
  • Are referrals and prescription writing included?
  • Who explains test results and contacts you if action is needed?
  • Can the doctor share the consultation record with your usual GP?

Check the provider and clinician

Section 3 of 5 · 1 min read

Use the GMC register to check the doctor’s registration. For an online healthcare provider in England, check the relevant CQC information; the CQC does not regulate the whole UK. Confirm the provider’s actual location and the regulator responsible for it.

Plan the handover

Section 4 of 5 · 1 min read

Bring an accurate medication list and relevant health history. Ask for a written summary of the assessment, any proposed next steps and who is responsible for them. If ongoing treatment is recommended, clarify the review frequency and cost before agreeing.

Private care and NHS care can involve different clinicians. Do not assume a prescription or referral will transfer automatically; discuss the arrangement with both services.

Before choosing between NHS and private care

Section 5 of 5 · 1 min read

Start by identifying the service you need and whether you already have a referral or existing care plan. Ask your usual clinician about the relevant NHS route, then use a private quote to understand the alternative pathway rather than only its appointment speed.

Our handover guide helps identify who will order tests, interpret results and manage continuing treatment. Use the appointment preparation sheet to keep your questions and next steps together.
