Start with the right assessment

Section 1 of 5 · 1 min read

Describe the concern you want assessed and ask which clinician will see you. Check the doctor on the GMC register, including relevant specialist registration where applicable. A cosmetic treatment menu is not a substitute for assessment of a medical skin concern.

The British Association of Dermatologists provides patient information on skin conditions and treatments. Use that material to prepare questions, rather than to diagnose a lesion or choose a procedure yourself.

Ask what a procedure quote covers

Section 2 of 5 · 1 min read

If a procedure is proposed, ask whether the quote includes the clinician, treatment room, local anaesthetic, laboratory analysis and follow-up. Confirm whether the initial consultation is separate and what happens if the assessment finds that a different approach is needed.

Make the results pathway explicit

Section 3 of 5 · 1 min read

  • If tissue is sent for analysis, is histology included?
  • Who explains the result and within what expected period?
  • How are findings requiring further care handled?
  • Are dressings, wound reviews and aftercare included?
  • Will your usual GP receive a report?

Keep medical and cosmetic goals clear

Section 4 of 5 · 1 min read

Explain what matters to you and ask the clinician about the likely process, uncertainty and alternatives. Avoid choosing a service solely from before-and-after images. Keep the treatment plan and quote, including any further visits that may be needed.

If a symptom is changing or concerning, seek a clinical assessment rather than waiting for a price promotion.

Before choosing between NHS and private care

Section 5 of 5 · 1 min read

Start by identifying the service you need and whether you already have a referral or existing care plan. Ask your usual clinician about the relevant NHS route, then use a private quote to understand the alternative pathway rather than only its appointment speed.

Our handover guide helps identify who will order tests, interpret results and manage continuing treatment. Use the appointment preparation sheet to keep your questions and next steps together.
