Start with the exact hip operation

Section 1 of 6 · 1 min read

The NHS explains hip replacement as replacing damaged joint parts with an artificial joint. An elective first replacement, revision of an existing implant and resurfacing need different quotations. Ask the surgeon to put the proposed operation and side in writing before approaching another hospital for a comparable estimate.

A general hip-surgery headline may cover a different procedure from the one discussed in clinic. Check whether the price is for one hip, which implant is planned and whether any additional work is anticipated. A more expensive technique is not automatically the appropriate choice for you.

Read the consultation column before comparing totals

Section 2 of 6 · 1 min read

Practice Plus Group separates its consultation from the surgery figure. Benenden also lists an initial appointment separately. Nuffield Taunton displays both a treatment amount and a larger guide total. This is why subtracting the headline prices does not establish a saving for identical care.

Keep a line for the appointment, another for investigations and one for the agreed surgical package. Mark a charge as included only when the provider confirms it. If you already have imaging or a specialist report, ask whether it can be used and whether that changes any fee.

Turn the implant and hospital stay into a clear quote

Section 3 of 6 · 1 min read

Ask for a quote that names the surgeon, hospital, planned implant and expected admission. Confirm whether the surgeon and anaesthetist will bill separately or are included in one hospital package. Where the price is described as a guide, ask what must happen before it becomes fixed and how long that fixed quote will remain valid.

Discuss what happens financially if pre-assessment changes the plan, surgery is postponed or a longer admission is needed. Request the cancellation and complication terms as written documents. A booking deposit, consultation payment and treatment balance may have different refund rules.

Make rehabilitation part of the comparison

Section 4 of 6 · 1 min read

The NHS recovery guide emphasises that recovery varies and that the care team’s instructions matter. Ask your chosen service which physiotherapy appointments, mobility equipment and wound checks are included, who provides them and where you will need to attend. A general promise of aftercare does not answer those practical questions.

If you are travelling to another region, find out how postoperative concerns will be assessed once you are home. Keep transport, accommodation and help with everyday tasks on your personal planning list. These can affect affordability even when they are outside the hospital’s surgical fee.

Keep NHS access and private booking decisions connected

Section 5 of 6 · 1 min read

For an NHS assessment, start with your GP or current musculoskeletal team. The NHS referral guidance explains that specialist referral depends on clinical need. Ask which local route applies in your UK nation and what information the receiving team requires.

If you obtain a private opinion while waiting, tell both services and clarify how reports and existing appointments will be handled. Do not assume a private operation automatically includes NHS rehabilitation or prescribing afterwards. Our NHS and private care guide explains the handover questions to settle.

Use your final consultation to resolve the unknown costs

Section 6 of 6 · 1 min read

Bring a short list of unresolved items: additional scans, implant changes, postoperative medicines, rehabilitation and return visits. Ask the clinician to separate clinical recommendations from administrative estimates, and ask the booking team to attach prices to the confirmed plan. Leave genuinely undecided items open rather than treating them as zero.

Before paying the treatment balance, make sure you know the total agreed charge, the scope of aftercare and the person to contact if the plan changes. Keep the quote and clinical letter together. This gives you a useful record of what you have agreed, rather than just a screenshot of a starting price.

Your questions, answered

Are these the cheapest hip replacements in the UK?

No. These are selected direct-provider examples, not a whole-market ranking. Their locations and inclusions differ, and a clinician must confirm the suitable operation before a personal quote can be compared.

Should I add a consultation fee to every listed price?

No. Check the scope first. Nuffield Taunton’s displayed guide total already allows for the stated initial consultation, while the other examples list an appointment separately. Additional diagnostics still need confirmation.

Does a hip replacement package include all recovery costs?

Only the written package can establish that. Ask about physiotherapy, equipment, wound review, medicines, unplanned care and the time or location limits of aftercare. Personal travel and support costs need separate planning.
