Bring an itinerary before comparing a vaccine basket

Section 1 of 6 · 1 min read

Prepare the countries and regions you will visit, departure date, trip length and planned activities. Bring available vaccination records and relevant health information through the clinic’s requested process. A country name alone may not give the clinician enough information to assess the trip. Explain any uncertainty in the itinerary so that advice is based on what is actually planned.

Ask what the initial appointment includes and whether it can cover everyone travelling with you. Each traveller still needs an individual clinical assessment. For families, clarify age restrictions, available appointment lengths and whether several bookings are needed. Do not reserve a particular vaccine solely because it appears in another traveller’s checklist or a low-price promotion.

Understand a conditional consultation charge

Section 2 of 6 · 1 min read

On 20 October 2026, Boots’ travel health page listed £20 for an initial consultation only when recommended vaccines or antimalarials are declined. Its terms waive that charge if recommended products are received or nothing is recommended; where applicable, it is charged once for a group. This is not a standard fee to add to every vaccination bill.

The same page listed typhoid at £40 per dose and yellow fever at £80 per dose. These are selected dated prices, subject to clinical suitability and service availability. Yellow fever vaccination is available through designated centres. Ask the chosen location to confirm the applicable consultation rule and the full quote.

Compare the complete course and appointment plan

Section 3 of 6 · 1 min read

A per-dose fee is not automatically the price of the complete plan. Ask the clinician to state the proposed number of doses, the appointment schedule and any later visits that would be needed. Keep vaccination, prescribed products, consultation charges and administrative items separate. Do not estimate the dose schedule yourself from a price table.

For each proposed item, ask whether the quoted price includes administration and whether the amount is locked in for later appointments. If a course must continue elsewhere, ask how records and payment will work. Record any possible extra consultation fee and the circumstances triggering it. The useful comparison is the provider’s written plan for the trip, not the sum of the cheapest individual entries from unrelated clinics.

Check the NHS route and the local arrangements

Section 4 of 6 · 1 min read

The NHS travel-vaccination guide explains that some travel vaccines can be provided free through the NHS when appropriate, including hepatitis A, typhoid, cholera and the combined diphtheria, tetanus and polio vaccine. Other travel vaccinations may require private payment. In England, ask your GP practice about its travel service before assuming that every appointment must be purchased privately.

In Scotland, NHS inform directs travellers to local health-board services; the GP practice is not the usual starting point for this service. Wales and Northern Ireland have their own local arrangements. Confirm the route for your area and allow time for assessment, rather than assuming a private booking can later be reimbursed.

Allow time for advice, appointments and records

Section 5 of 6 · 1 min read

The NHS advises seeking travel-vaccination advice at least four to six weeks before travel where possible. Contact a service even if the departure date is closer; the clinician can explain what remains possible. Appointment availability and a product being in stock do not by themselves establish that a recommended course can be completed in time.

Ask whether any certificate or replacement record is included, whether a separate appointment is required and what identification to bring. Check the clinic’s cancellation terms before buying a course, especially if travel dates may change. Keep appointment dates beside flight dates in your plan. Request confirmation of what has been administered and how to obtain a replacement record later.

Leave with one clear plan and a realistic budget

Section 6 of 6 · 1 min read

Ask who will answer questions between appointments and whether further advice about a changed itinerary would be a new paid consultation. Keep the provider’s contact details, written recommendations and vaccine record together. If several clinics are involved, ensure each has the relevant information rather than assuming records automatically follow you between providers.

Your budget should distinguish costs confirmed today, future appointments already quoted and items awaiting clinical assessment. Do not include an unconfirmed item as zero. Our cost checklist helps structure the quote, while the appointment guide helps organise questions. This page explains fees and access; a travel-health professional determines the advice appropriate to the traveller and itinerary.

Your questions, answered

Should I add a consultation fee to every vaccine price?

Only if the provider’s terms say it applies. Some services use conditional charges or include assessment when recommended products are provided. Ask the clinic to show the consultation line in the written quote and explain when an additional appointment would trigger another fee.

Why can a course cost more than a listed vaccination price?

A listed fee may describe one dose, while the assessed plan can require more appointments or other products. Ask the clinician to specify the appropriate schedule, then have the provider price that plan. Do not infer a personal course from a price table.

Where should I start for NHS travel vaccinations?

Check the service for your nation and area. In England, ask your GP practice about its travel provision; Scotland directs travellers through local health-board arrangements. Eligibility, appointment access and the proposed vaccine matter, so confirm the route before making a private booking.
