## Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme

Price: £0 for eligible people
NHS-funded nine-month programme. Your GP practice can check diabetes risk and referral eligibility; this is not an open-entry commercial subscription.
Platforms / service: Free NHS referral programme · England

- A structured lifestyle programme for people at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes, with support around food, activity and weight.
- NHS England describes both face-to-face groups and digital delivery, with a choice between these routes when referred.
- Digital support can include health-coach access, peer support and tools for setting and recording goals.

Limitations:
- Its purpose is diabetes prevention. Wanting to lose weight alone does not establish eligibility, and it is different from a programme for people already diagnosed with diabetes.
- Nine months is a meaningful time commitment. Ask about session schedules, accessibility and the local provider before choosing a format.
- These are England programme details; arrangements elsewhere in the UK need checking locally.

## NHS Digital Weight Management Programme

Price: £0 for eligible people
A free 12-week online programme accessed through referral. Ask your GP practice or a participating community pharmacy about access.
Platforms / service: Free NHS referral programme · England

- Recipes, nutrition information, wellbeing support and activity guidance are delivered online, so learning can fit around your own schedule.
- The published criteria are age 18 or over, BMI at least 30, and diabetes, high blood pressure or both. The BMI threshold is 27.5 for people from Black, Asian and other minority ethnic backgrounds.
- You choose from the weight-management plans offered after referral.

Limitations:
- A smartphone or computer and regular internet access are needed; it will not suit someone who needs an entirely offline service.
- It is a defined 12-week programme, so ask what support remains afterwards.
- Referral requires a suitability check. Pregnancy, an active eating disorder and some other clinical circumstances can exclude someone from this particular programme.

## NHS Weight Loss Plan

Price: £0
The NHS describes its 12-week Weight Loss Plan app as free. It is separate from the referral-only NHS Digital Weight Management Programme.
Platforms / service: Free self-guided app

- Set a weight-loss goal, keep a record of food and use a daily calorie target within a 12-week habit-building plan.
- A way to try structured self-monitoring before committing to a paid membership.
- The accompanying NHS website explains healthy eating, portions, activity and routes to extra help.

Limitations:
- This is a self-guided tool: do not assume downloading it provides personal clinical assessment or regular appointments.
- Recording food and working through a plan still take time. A free download cannot remove the practical cost of groceries or access to suitable activity.
- Speak to a healthcare professional before changing your diet if you have a relevant medical condition, a prescribed diet, or a current or previous eating disorder.

## Noom Weight

Price: UK checkout price required
No single comparable GBP tariff was verified. Noom publishes a USD price table; its UK App Store lists several in-app amounts without clear plan durations. Obtain the full UK charge and renewal term before subscribing.
Platforms / service: Paid app-based behaviour programme

- Noom Weight combines behaviour-change lessons with food, calorie and activity tracking. The app is listed in the UK App Store.
- The programme is distinct from Noom medication services: a Noom Weight subscription does not include medication.
- Optional one-to-one coaching is advertised, but the exact support and any paid add-ons should be confirmed for your UK offer.

Limitations:
- Subscriptions automatically renew unless cancelled; price can vary with promotions, plan length and whether you join through the website or an app store.
- A free app download is not the same as a free programme. Compare the amount charged for the whole term, not just an advertised monthly equivalent.
- Some public app copy describes US services. It should not be read as proof those clinical services are available in the UK.

## Second Nature without medication

Price: From £33/month
The provider advertises £33/month for its non-medication programme and identifies a 12-month subscription basis in its programme comparison material. Subscription choices and the final payment schedule are shown after its health quiz.
Platforms / service: Paid digital coaching programme

- The non-medication route includes health-coach support, app access and a community group.
- Its published programme runs through Core, Growth and Maintain phases over 12 months, covering habit development and longer-term maintenance.
- Recipes and educational material are included; this is a coaching and behaviour-change service rather than a prescription purchase.

Limitations:
- The headline monthly amount does not tell you the complete commitment. Check the trial payment, whether payment is upfront and the total due before joining.
- The FAQ says ending a six- or twelve-month commitment early may require repayment of discounts, capped at £100, with stated exceptions.
- App, coach and group access end when the subscription ends. NHS-funded availability is a separate, eligibility-dependent route.

## Slimming World group

Price: £6.95/week + £5 joining
Standard recommended retail price: £11.95 in week one, then £6.95 weekly. Participating groups offer six- and twelve-week Countdown packages. Confirm the fee with the local consultant.
Platforms / service: Paid in-person group

- Weekly meetings combine group support with the Food Optimising eating plan and access to the member website and app.
- The plan aims to reduce calorie intake through food choices rather than asking members to count every calorie.
- Published reduced weekly fees are £6.65 for people aged 60 or over and £5.95 for ages 16–17.

Limitations:
- A weekly meeting adds travel and timetable constraints. Ask about missed weeks and holidays before paying for a longer package.
- Member app access is linked to attendance; the terms describe hibernating access after repeated missed groups.
- Not counting calories does not mean energy intake is irrelevant. Portions and food choices still matter, and results vary.

## Slimming World Online

Price: From £60 for 3 months
Bronze is £60, Silver £65 and Gold £80 for the initial three months. The terms state ongoing automatic renewal is currently £20/month unless cancelled or another package is chosen.
Platforms / service: Paid digital membership

- Food Optimising, recipes, a weight-loss planner, activity videos and a barcode scanner are available through the online service and member app.
- Online community support and virtual events offer ways to take part without travelling to a weekly group.
- The higher initial packages add books or a magazine subscription; compare whether you actually want those extras.

Limitations:
- The entry package requires a three-month purchase, even if a weekly equivalent is advertised.
- After the initial 14-day cooling-off period, the published terms say cancellations do not receive a refund; cancelling stops future renewal.
- Online community and customer-service support are a different format from attending a local consultant-led group. App-store purchases must be managed through the relevant store.

## WeightWatchers (WW)

Price: Core from £10/month
The current UK plans page advertises Core at £10/month and Core+ at £14/month, based on a 12-month commitment. These are promotional starting rates, not a guaranteed flexible monthly tariff.
Platforms / service: Paid app membership; workshop option

- Core uses a personal Points budget, food logging, recipe ideas and activity integration to structure everyday choices.
- Food Points reflect nutritional information; the system is a way of organising eating rather than a requirement to buy supplied meals.
- Core+ adds the coaching and workshop format. Core advertises two introductory weeks of workshop access; check what remains included afterwards.

Limitations:
- The plans page says the subscription renews for another twelve-month term unless cancelled. Cancelling during a commitment takes effect at its end.
- Points and food logging need ongoing attention. A subscription cannot guarantee that a particular system fits your routines or relationship with food.
- Look at the full-term cost, renewal price and workshop availability before choosing between Core and Core+.

## What are you actually paying for?

Most of the options here organise food choices, activity and habits. The commercial difference is often the delivery: meetings, a coach, an app, a branded food system or a community. Check the amount and type of human contact. “Support” might mean scheduled sessions, a group forum or messages within defined hours; those are different offers.

## Calorie control: different methods, the same question

The NHS explains that eating fewer calories than you use can help with weight loss. Some programmes use direct calorie tracking, while others use points, categories, portions or meal structures. Those methods can make choices easier for some people, but the branding does not remove the need to consider the overall diet. Avoid reading a “free food” label as proof that any quantity of every meal has the same effect.

## Where programmes can disappoint

The useful question is whether the offer fits your circumstances. Repetitive logging can be burdensome; group times can clash with work; a digital plan may need reliable internet; long minimum terms can be costly if the format does not suit you. These are practical limitations, not allegations of misconduct. Check a sample session or app preview and ask what happens if you cannot continue.

## Use complaint information carefully

A few vivid reviews cannot establish how often a problem occurs. If you investigate complaints, look for the date, the exact plan, the issue raised and how it was resolved. Separate dissatisfaction with results from billing, cancellation or access problems. We have not published unverified complaint rates, copied testimonials or inferred that one brand produces better results than another.

## Compare a real household budget

Write down the first payment, the minimum commitment, renewal, joining fees and anything extra. Then add food, transport, childcare or equipment where relevant. An annual plan at a lower monthly equivalent can cost more upfront than a weekly group. A meal replacement product, recipe ingredient list and ordinary grocery shop are separate costs unless the published plan explicitly includes them.

## Check free support before paying

The NHS Weight Loss Plan is a self-guided starting point, while NHS Digital Weight Management and Healthier You have referral criteria in England. These routes are not interchangeable and are not a UK-wide entitlement to a particular commercial provider. Ask your GP practice or local service what is available where you live, including accessibility and support after a programme ends.

## Calorie-controlled does not have to mean calorie-counted

The NHS explains weight loss in terms of using more energy than is consumed. Counting calories is one tool; portion changes and balanced meals are alternatives. Points, food categories and habit coaching organise how people make changes, rather than removing the role of energy intake. That distinction helps assess a programme without dismissing its support as worthless. Source: https://www.nhs.uk/better-health/lose-weight/calorie-counting/

## Support can include more than a diet sheet

NHS weight-management guidance describes coaching, psychological support, groups, activity and food advice. Some people need specialist care. A paid membership should be judged on the support actually delivered, accessibility and ongoing cost; its price alone cannot establish suitability or likely results. Source: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/overweight-and-obesity/

## Diet quality and portion size both matter

The NHS advises balanced meals and attention to portions. A food being described as healthy does not make its energy content irrelevant. Medical conditions, prescribed diets and a history of eating disorders call for individual advice before making weight-loss changes. Source: https://www.nhs.uk/better-health/lose-weight/healthy-eating-when-trying-to-lose-weight/

## Free NHS support has separate access rules

The referral-only Digital Weight Management Programme is a free twelve-week England service with health and BMI criteria. It is separate from the freely downloadable NHS Weight Loss Plan. Eligibility for one does not automatically establish eligibility for medication or another NHS service. Source: https://www.england.nhs.uk/digital-weight-management/how-to-access-the-programme/

## Editorial and clinical scope

These are editorial summaries of official information, not personal diet advice or a registered-clinician review. Speak to an appropriate health professional about a medical condition, prescribed diet or current or previous eating disorder before changing your diet. We do not promise a particular result.

## Are paid weight-loss memberships necessary?

No. The NHS has free self-guided information and some referral programmes for eligible people. Paid programmes may add meetings, coaching or a particular tracking system; compare that support with what you need and can use.

## Do points or food categories avoid calorie control?

They can simplify choices without asking you to count every calorie, but they do not remove the role of energy intake. Judge whether the method helps you build a suitable, sustainable routine rather than assuming a branded system changes that principle.

## Is the cheapest monthly price the cheapest commitment?

Not necessarily. Joining fees, minimum terms and upfront payments can change the amount you must pay. Compare the full initial commitment and renewal charge, not only an advertised monthly equivalent.

## Are these customer complaint rankings?

No. We explain limitations visible in the published services and terms. We have not measured complaint rates or verified a representative set of customer reviews.

## Can I use this page if I already take a weight-loss medicine?

The page compares support programmes without including medication in the quoted fee. Discuss changes to your care with your prescriber; this comparison is not advice to stop, start or replace a medicine.
