## Short answer

NHS Wegovy access must be checked by formulation and reason for treatment. The injection’s specialist weight-management recommendation differs from its cardiovascular pathway, and neither automatically establishes tablet funding. Ask the responsible NHS service which recommendation it is assessing, what the programme includes and how follow-up would work in your area.

The word Wegovy does not identify one single NHS pathway. Formulation, reason for treatment and funding recommendation all matter.

## Key points

- Write down “injection” or “tablet” when asking about Wegovy. A shared brand name does not make formulations interchangeable for prescribing, price comparison or NHS funding.
- Identify the clinical purpose of the referral. The specialist weight-management pathway and a cardiovascular prevention discussion should not be reduced to one universal eligibility checklist.
- Ask about the end of the programme as well as the start: who explains review decisions, how GP communication works and what continuing support is planned.

## The injection pathway for weight management

NICE TA875 recommends injectable semaglutide in a specialist weight-management service, with a maximum two-year treatment period under that pathway. Its established maintenance dose is 2.4 mg weekly. This is a specific NHS recommendation; it does not mean every licensed injection strength or every semaglutide use has identical funding rules. The obesity guidance describes a weight-related comorbidity with BMI at least 35, or BMI 30–34.9 when specialist-referral criteria are met, with lower thresholds for specified ethnic backgrounds. The service assesses the whole clinical picture. Meeting a number on a webpage is not confirmation that treatment will be offered.

## A separate cardiovascular pathway

NICE TA1152, published in May 2026, concerns semaglutide for adults with established cardiovascular disease and overweight or obesity to reduce further major cardiovascular events. It is a separate clinical indication and recommendation. Ask the treating clinician whether it is relevant; it is not a way to bypass weight-management referral criteria.

## Where the tablet fits

The MHRA authorised oral Wegovy in June 2026. Its announcement said NHS availability had not then been established. The injection’s funded pathway cannot simply be applied to the tablet. Our source review found no verified final newer tablet funding decision to promise here. For costs outside an NHS pathway, use iGovy for the injection and Ogovy for the pill . These are Med Easy’s formulation-specific price references. Do not compare milligrams across the formulations or change product without your prescriber.

## Finding the service that covers your area

A local NHS weight-management team may deliver care directly or commission another provider. Our NHS service directory gives verified examples and their catchments. In Sussex, the published Tier 3 pathway names Morelife and links medicine provision to the local Wegovy policy. Prepare three questions for the referring team: which programme is appropriate, how the referral is sent, and what acceptance into the programme means. A programme may offer several forms of support; acceptance does not determine the medicine decision.

## Plan beyond the first appointment

Ask what the service will review over time, how it communicates with your GP and what happens when the funded treatment period or programme ends. A useful plan includes the transition, not only the first prescription. Who explains the decision after assessment? What support is provided between reviews? Who manages any change in treatment? How will you know when the next appointment is due? What continuing care will be available afterwards?

## Questions to ask

- Is the referral about weight management, cardiovascular prevention or another clinical question that needs its own assessment?
- Which Wegovy formulation and NHS recommendation are being discussed, rather than assumed from the brand name?
- Which local service receives the referral and how will I hear whether the programme has accepted it?
- What reviews, support and communication with my GP would be included if treatment is offered?
- How will the team explain the treatment duration, review points and next steps when the funded programme ends?

## Frequently asked questions

### Does the injection’s NHS recommendation include Wegovy tablets?

Do not assume that it does. Formulations have separate prescribing and funding questions, even when the brand name is shared. Ask the NHS service about the current tablet position specifically. For a private comparison, keep tablet listings and injection listings separate and follow the formulation on your prescription.

### Is the two-year limit a rule for every use of Wegovy?

The maximum two-year period described in this guide belongs to NICE’s specialist weight-management recommendation. It should not be applied automatically to a different indication or pathway. Ask the treating service which recommendation governs your care and how its review and duration rules would be explained before treatment begins.

### Will joining a specialist programme guarantee Wegovy?

A referral is for assessment and support under that service’s criteria. Acceptance into a programme is not a promise of a chosen medicine. Ask what decisions the first assessment makes, what other support the service provides and who will explain the options available for your circumstances after reviewing your history.
