## Short answer

Compare the gynaecologist appointment by clinician, duration and location, then separate scans, samples, procedures and follow-up fees. A combined consultation-and-scan package has a different scope from a consultation alone. Ask how examination, consent, results and ongoing responsibility will be handled, and obtain a revised estimate before agreeing to additional paid care.

A gynaecology consultation buys time to discuss and assess a concern; it does not automatically include every scan, sample or treatment that might follow. Compare the first appointment and the later decision points separately.

## Key points

- A consultation-only fee should not be compared directly with a scan package.
- Check both sample collection and laboratory processing when a test is proposed.
- Arrange a named contact for results and clarify the cost of the next review.

## Compare the same location and appointment type

London Gynaecology's fee page , checked on 20 October 2026, listed a 30-minute new consultant appointment at £325 in Central London and £275 in Richmond . A first consultation with a pelvic ultrasound in the same visit was listed at £625 and £575 respectively. These are that provider's location-specific prices, not a UK average or a recommendation to purchase a scan. A GP appointment focused on women's health, a consultant gynaecologist appointment and a combined investigation package should not be treated as identical services. Ask the booking team to name the clinician's role, appointment length and location, then confirm that the written quote applies to the booking you are considering.

## Define the question before adding a package

Make a short note of the concern you want to discuss and the information already available. Ask the clinic whether it handles that type of appointment and whether it needs a referral. If you have existing reports, find out how to send them securely and whether the clinician wants to review them before the visit. Ask whether booking a consultation first would allow the investigation plan to be agreed during that appointment, and how any later test would be priced. A package may be convenient, but its name does not establish that every component is necessary for your circumstances. The clinical conversation should explain what information an examination or test would add. Keep an unconfirmed investigation as a possible later cost rather than a compulsory addition to your first booking.

## Identify the fees outside the appointment

The provider's fee page distinguishes consultant time and advice from scans, laboratory work, procedures and prescriptions unless a package explicitly includes them. It also describes a consultation summary letter and relevant onward referrals. When reading another clinic's quote, request the same level of detail instead of assuming its inclusions match. For any proposed test, ask whether the amount covers taking the sample, laboratory processing and explaining the result. For a procedure, ask about clinician, facility, anaesthetic and aftercare fees where relevant. Confirm whether further appointments are included and what happens if the initial assessment changes the proposed plan. Put uncertain items on a separate list and agree when their price will be confirmed before you authorise the next stage.

## Arrange support, privacy and consent in advance

The GMC's intimate-examination guidance says clinicians should explain an examination, obtain consent and explain that it can be stopped. It also covers offering a chaperone and maintaining privacy. A booking fee or bundled package does not replace that discussion. Tell the clinic about access, communication or support needs before the appointment. Ask about a chaperone, the possibility of a supporter attending and any preference about the clinician. Confirm how the service will accommodate the request and whether a different appointment is needed. Describe what would help you participate comfortably; you do not need to accept an unexplained step simply because time has been reserved. Follow the clinic's preparation instructions for the agreed appointment.

## Make results and continuing care part of the plan

Ask who will contact you, which communication method will be used and when to enquire if a result has not arrived. Clarify whether a result message is included or a further consultation is required. A report uploaded to a portal and a conversation about its implications are different services to check. If treatment is proposed, ask who issues prescriptions, what private prescribing or medicine charges apply and when review is due. If ongoing responsibility may move to your usual clinician, request the relevant summary and ask how acceptance will be confirmed. Our private and NHS-care guide explains the handover questions. Keep a named contact for outstanding results while that discussion takes place rather than assuming another service is already managing them.

## Keep NHS access and payment arrangements distinct

The NHS specialist-referral guide explains the usual GP route to a gynaecologist and the clinical decision involved. Ask your local service which pathway applies; access arrangements differ across the four UK nations. A private assessment can provide information, but payment does not automatically secure NHS investigations, prescribing or follow-up. If using insurance, obtain confirmation for the named consultant and facility and ask whether any proposed tests require separate approval. For self-pay care, compare the deposit, balance, cancellation terms and itemised estimate. Use our appointment preparation guide and cost checklist to keep the clinical question, practical arrangements and payment decisions clear before you book.

## Questions to ask

- Does this price cover a consultant appointment, a GP visit or a combined package?
- Which tests, prescriptions and procedures are charged separately?
- Can the clinic arrange my requested support and a chaperone?
- How will results be explained and when would a review fee apply?
- Who remains responsible while any NHS handover is considered?

## Frequently asked questions

### Is a pelvic ultrasound included in a gynaecologist consultation?

Only if the booking explicitly includes it. Some providers publish separate consultation-only and combined consultation-and-scan fees. Confirm the exact package, location and clinician, and ask what happens financially if assessment changes the planned investigation or a different test is advised.

### Can I ask for a chaperone at a private appointment?

Discuss this with the clinic when arranging the appointment. GMC guidance covers explaining intimate examinations, obtaining consent, offering a chaperone and maintaining privacy. Tell the service about support or communication needs in advance so it can explain the arrangements for your visit.

### Does the first consultation price include follow-up and prescriptions?

Do not assume it does. Ask how results are communicated, whether a further review is included and which prescribing or medicine costs are separate. If ongoing care is proposed, request a written plan identifying review dates, fees and the clinician responsible for each next step.
